1968 landrover lightweight rare early chassis 172 of over 3000 built.

1968 Half ton air portable lightweight demobbed in 1976 hence R registered plate.
2.25 petrol engine in good order.Starts well and does not smoke.Very quiet tick over.
Chassis has been repaired in the past to what seems professional level and is very sound and undersealed.
Bulkhead very solid like new.Rear crossmember in same condition.
Original crash gearbox works well and does not jump out of any gear.
BATTERY ISOLATING SWITCH

Original seats in good order with no rips or tears.
Following work done to bring back to good roadworthy condition;
   New clutch and clutch release mechanism .
New exhaust.
New front swivels and wheel bearings and hub seals all round.
New rear hub seals and one rear half shaft.All oils renewed to axles transfer box,g/box etc .Most oil seals renewed ,so doesn't leek like a sieve.
All brakes renewed including transmission handbrake,and all new wheel cylinders.
New doors,driver and passenger, top and bottom
New Exmoor hood fitted .Excellent truck cab roof  available if required.
All receipts for parts etc supplied with car.V5c in my name.
All electrics working as they should,including heater/demister.
This is a rare early lightweight chassis number 23600172 they were only manufactured from 1968 so it makes it one of the survivors from the start of production.
The car is still mot'd until September after being off the road for 10 months to have the repair works done.Mot will not be a problem after all the improvements.Currently resprayed inside and out in good old olive drab.

Chassis Number LBCAV1AA****** (identifies it correctly as a 109 Stage 1 V8.

The V8 engine is also correct for this model as they can so often be changed.

I bought this Land Rover in April 2012 from a policeman in Milton Keynes and have had it for just over 5 years. Since owning it have had the suspension changed to Parabolic springs for a more comfortable ride (if that exists) and have kept it well maintained and serviced spending several thousand pounds on maintenance to make it turn key reliable.

It is completely original apart from the suspension & wheels.

The Gentleman previous to me bought it in October 2008

Stage 1 V8 history

This is one of the rarest production run Land Rovers and was produced at the end of the “Series 3” production as the “Stage 1” of the development of the Defender.

Land Rover were losing out on sales to Toyota Land cruiser which produced much more power and therefore they needed a bigger power plant so the distinctive flat front of  this model was created to accommodate the first factory fitted 3.5 litre V8 engine to a Land Rover.

The extra power and reliability created a lucrative export market for Land Rover but few were sold in the UK due to the fuel crisis in the 1980’s making running costs high.

If you aren’t familiar with them just google “Stage 1 V8” as there is loads of info about them & their history online.

Today according to the “How many left” website about 106 of these remain Taxed and road legal as follows:

Condition

This Land Rover is now nearly 37 years old and is not in restored condition but is in very good usable condition & kept garaged

The important bits including the Bulkhead are solid and the canvas top is in pretty good nick & could do with recolouring & waterproofing if you were fussy. All the lights & electrics work as they should.

The paintwork is good however this is a Land Rover so there are scratches and the odd ding here and there & the usual marks where the spare used to sit on the bonnet, but that is what they are all about so it isn’t a “Trailer Queen” showroom model but a great rare vehicle that you can be proud to use.

Of course please bear in mind there is no Air Conditioning, electric windows or even a radio so if you don’t know what you are really looking at here then please come & see it to make sure it is what you expect.

Tax free classic so it costs virtually nothing to have it on your driveway each year as you play. 

For sale is our very straight and honest 109 11/12 seater station wagon. Unlike many others this has not been upgraded as far as I am aware other than a recent insertion of the 2.5 NA Diesel motor that runs beautifully and pulls uphill in all gears (rare) and a Ken Lowe fan to give it the space it needs (and excellent hot weather performance if you are going to Morocco a la the Marrakesh Express...). 

• Chassis is in excellent repaired condition (could do with a paint and waxoyl to keep it so) 
• Bulkhead in excellent condition. 
• Full galavanised Brownchurch Expedition roofrack and ladder. 
• Comes with both center front seat and cubby. 
• It comes with a second complete set of wheels with essentially new tyres, jack and wheel brace. 
• It has a new radiator and Ken Lowe fan. 
• Free Wheeling hubs. 
• Brand new tan seat belts in front (have belts and brackets for rear forward facing seats if required) 
• One year old heavy duty battery. 
• I also have a box full of new window and door seals ready to go in after deciding if to paint or not. 
• Originally Limestone in colour it has been painted a satin green by a previous owner. Admittedly it is not the best paint job in the world but it has an excellent patina and can stay as is for the greenlaner. Alternatively as the panels are so straight it could be brought really up to the next level quite easily with a new paintjob. Small dings and holes here and there as expected for age.

It is not without its faults being a 43 year old car but that is its charm. We bought it as a family car that we could go exploring and not worry about the kids enjoying it too. All the issues are easily fixed for those fussed and include: 

• The rear floor and door are both overlaid with aluminium checkerplate. 
• Dash cracked. 
• Driver's side windscreen panel edges are fogged (but still legal- is the only advisory on latest MOT). Don't notice it driving but visible. (Only haven't replaced as couldn't decide whether to shell out for a heated glass or not.)
• Side window runners could do with replacing (get the Series 2/3 club plastic ones, they are great or renew with original brushstyle) 
• The door rubbers (included) should be put on to help seal her up from wind, rain and noise.
• Doors are good but ready for a little tidying at their bottom frames before they get out of hand. 
• Odometer says 22758. I have no idea whether that is accurate or not! 

It is noisy, breezy, has the classic Landy lean but gets great comments wherever she goes and looks the part. It is a work in progress (as they will always be) but definitely drivable and on the road now. I took it to a car boot sale to get rid of other stuff on the weekend and she carried a huge load with seats folded back and on roof rack. Performed faultlessly and received a huge amount of interest and a few offers.Buy and drive home or, well, anywhere.

Oh, and it has a second fuel tank in the wheelwell compartment in the rear for those longer journeys or as a spare. 

Comes with one years MOT (already in place).

Sellers Comments - 1980-just passed its Mot-got receipt spent £500 no welding required underneath is good. Remember its a 37 year old vehicle but its solid and great fun to drive. LAND ROVER SERIES 3 STATION WAGON

Sellers Comments - This is a Series 3 Station Wagon 1976 Diesel in Limestone. It is very rare to find one in such good original condition that has been completely unmolested. It has had one previous owner from new until January this year when I bought it. My business is restoring series land rovers. If you would like to look at my work the site is Warne Series Restoration. Although this isn't one of my rebuilds everything has been checked over. There are no sign of any repairs ever being done to the chassis or body work, all of which is in very good condition. There are a couple of small blemishes which are shown in the photos on the front wings and a small dent on the rear just below the number plate. There are just a few small stone chips in the paint work. It has spent most of its life garaged. No rust in the doors, door pillars or anywhere else. The previous owner has given me the original bill of sale and lots of old MOT's. It has got a new MOT this week, had new brake drums, shoes and cylinders fitted. It has just been serviced and has 5 new Avon Ranger tyres. The interior has hardly a blemish, again all completely original which is so rare to find. The headlining is unmarked and the dash is like new. Also this should become tax exempt next year. Happy bidding.
