Description:
The Land Rover ‘One Ten’ was launched in 1983, and the ‘Ninety’ was launched shortly afterwards in 1984. In 1990, to avoid confusion with the then new ‘Discovery’, the two utility models were renamed ‘Defender’ with ‘110’ and ‘90’ designations respectively which carried on until the end of production in 2016. In 1998, the Td5 came along replacing the Tdi series engines, and was long lived until 2007.
This particular 90, affectionately known as ‘Clifford’ (as in the Big Red…) is a Hard Top model finished in stunning Rutland Red. This model offers the practicality of a van whilst still being a capable everyday vehicle. It certainly isn’t your typical dirty, neglected example having been well looked after over the years with many new parts and upgrades to make it a more enjoyable vehicle to drive.
The Landy drives nice and tight, and the Td5 engine fires up willingly as well as pulling very strongly, easily driving at modern road speeds with plenty of grunt in reserve thanks to the power upgrades. The gearbox, high and low gears, difflock and clutch all work perfectly, and the uprated brakes work strongly bringing it up to a stop nice and straight. The large BFG mud terrain tyres all have plenty of tread and are in good condition, and will get the Land Rover pretty much anywhere!
Underneath, the chassis is completely solid and has been well looked after receiving good undersealing inside and out, which protects it from the winter grime and salt. The bulkhead and footwells are excellent with no corrosion present. The body work is straight with excellent paintwork, there is the very odd small chip and light scratches from usage.
The interior is great, with Recaro cloth bucket seats, which are adjustable and have removable bases to access the seat box compartments. There is also a large, lockable cubby box in the front, and an even larger locking full-width compartment in the back with a gas strut – suitable for stowing tools, every day gubbins or even as a gun safe if you are into shooting. The rear panel work is lined out with carpeting, making it a comfortable place to be.
Everything works as it should, including the surround external lighting. A nice Raptor dash binnacle provides a housing for the Pioneer audio head unit, plus additional switches for the lights, heated screen and a slot for a CB radio if you wish to add one (the wiring is ready present). There is also a mount and external plug for a rotating warning beacon if you require one.
The odometer reads 98,238 miles, which we believe to be correct. Complementing the vehicle is a folder containing two sets of keys and various old MoTs and receipts for parts and work carried out. The original tower jack is in the vehicle. The vehicle is MoT’d until 26th Feb next year.
