Land Rover Series 2A 1965 Historic Vehicle Zero Vehicle Excise Duty

Sellers Comments - It started life in 1965 as a military FFR 24V wireless truck. It left military service after ten years. It was converted to 12 volts a long time ago by a previous owner, but there are a few remnants of its previous identity: a few redundant electrical bits on the bulkhead and (I think) oil cooler mounting points on the chassis in front of the radiator. You can see from the photos it's a “bitsa”. It has newish electronic dizzy, carb, and starter motor, prop shaft, radiator, exhaust. It is on modern wheels with Hankook mud tyres, but it does come with a set of old wheels. It comes with a many receipts showing what's been bought for it over the years.

System is set up so that doesn't require petrol to start. Mileage currently shows 63281 but cannot vouch for its accuracy. Has free-wheeling hubs. 1965 Land Rover series 2a SWB 88" ex military for spares repairs or restoration.

Sellers Comments - this Ex military Series 2a Land Rover. I think it could be ex RAF, but I'm sure someone will put me right on that.... This, obviously will require complete restoration. It had been used as a breakdown truck by the local garage here in Usk until it was parked up in 2002, first it was kept indoors, then later was evicted and has spent the last few years outside braving the elements. It joined civilian life in 1974 and was correctly registered as a 1965 vehicle with a "C" registration. (many were registered as if they were new vehicles) It would appear to have had just two previous owners since 1974. Other than the fitting of a truck cab, much of the original military equipment remains intact, which must make this a worthwhile project for the military vehicle enthusiast. The chassis has not survived particularly well. There are large holes along the length of the o/s chassis leg. The n/s is in better shape but has a large hole near the rear fuel tank outrigger. Basically it will need a lot of welding or a new chassis. The bulkhead is rusty but should be a good basis for repair using the available repair panels. Many series 2 bulkheads are now getting to the point where they are just not worth the bother. The front panel seems sound. Generally the bodywork is fairly straight in Land Rover terms other than the o/s rear wing which has been beaten straight at some point and has cracked. The Land Rover has been hand painted in a horrible shade of green hammerite but this is now peeling off in sheets to reveal the original military paint, still in surprisingly good condition! The engine runs if you pour petrol straight into the carburettor.... I could not get it to pump fuel from the tank to the carb... but then again, I didn't spend long messing with it. It rolls freely and steers easily, however both brake and clutch pedals have seized, so the Land Rover can not be driven. Other mechanical parts are therefore in unknown condition, but there is no reason to believe that there should be any serious problems here. It has a current V5c document and both the normal chassis plate and the military plate on the bulkhead. The registration number would appear to be transferable.

Land Rover series 2A 1965 TAX EXEMPT For Sale £7600

Sellers Comments - IVOR) the Land Rover is in great shape for 65 landy. He was refurbished before we purchased (not restored) we looked for a long time to find a pretty looking land rover, that was useable . There's a lot of rubbish ones out there and there are some stunning show examples, I would like to think ours is priced accordingly to its condition. Bodywork- the car was painted last august in coach enamel back to original colour, its not perfect but never the less looks lovely just how a Land Rover should. The worst parts are some panels have some runs in the paint, but this didn't bother us as it really looks lovely. There is no rot at all and has had new door tops, it has had new corner pieces in the top of the bulk head, the roof is also painted in coach enamel as are the wheels in the limestone colour. The engine we believe is out of a series 3 Land Rover, which makes a far nicer drive it changes gear beautifully and currently does a 25 mile round trip most days, will sit happily at 50mph, it had a full service before we purchased it and went to a dyno tuning centre to be set up correctly. The speedo currently shows 28000 miles? It has free wheeling hubs up front, and has just had the brakes completely refurbished and stops great ! It has 2" risers on the rear so its rear doesn't sit down has the wider LWB wheels The chassis has typically had some patching and new outriggers on the front, but has benefited from a new 3 quarter chassis back replacement, it has been fully painted black underneath Interior has all been carpeted front and rear, new rubber mats and brand new seats all with three point seat belts, you will also see from one of the photos the original plate from when the Land Rover was made.

Land Rover Series 2A - 1965 2.25 Petrol - 'C' Reg

Sellers Comments - ETL 141C was originally an RAF Vehicle and was decomissioned in the early 1970's (having been built at Solihull in 1965. I hold a certificate from the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust which confims the date of manufacture as 4th February 1965 and the type of car and chassis number. The car is registered as an historic vehicle. She has less than 58,000 on the clock and there is good evidence to suggest this is correct to the vehicle (engine considered original and was overhauled to the block in 2013 and the vehicle has not gone round the clock. Chasis number and engine numbers are known and can be supplied on request. She had 2 former keepers, an engineering enthusiast whom I bought the car from (he had owned her for 3 years) and the individual who purchased the car from the MOD. Im selling because I dont really have the skillset to maintain the car. She starts very well and Ive done about 15 miles a week on average for the last couple of years with no issues. She has 4 new tyres and is in good condition for a car which celebrates 51 years in a few days time. Ive lost a windscreen wiper blade which needs attention, the rear view mirror needs putting on and Im short of a side mirror glass to make her legally drive away. The car has the right heritage, type and general condition to make a first class restoration. Recently replaced the leaf spings and put a new exhaust on. Put new tyres on last year and have done only local miles in them. As can be seen, the car has been owned by people who have maintained its authenticity.

LAND ROVER series 2a IIa 1965 tax exempt with MOT 200TDi

The engine starts nicely & runs well it does have slight smoke on start up but then clears. There are no nasty rattles or bangs & there are no significant oil leaks very small amount underneath does drip slightly like they all do

Sellers Comments
With a heavy heart I have decided to sell my loved Land Rover 1969 200TDI  Series IIa.

I've owned this vehicle for 2 years, I loved the idea of a simple tax-exempt vehicle and have done a lot of work to it in my ownership.  Unfortunately, the family found it way too agricultural for daily use also my 17 year old son is buying a car & I need the room on the drive, so the Land Rover has to go.

The engine starts nicely & runs well it does have slight smoke on start up but then clears.  There are no nasty rattles or bangs & there are no significant oil leaks very small amount underneath does drip slightly like they all do.  She has a series 3 gearbox so no synchromesh in second gear, had gearbox input/output shaft oil seals replaced as when I first had her she used to leave an oil trail down the road, that has been fixed.  All the gears are there & high/low ratio selects properly. The clutch is fine & the car has never jumped out of gear. The car has an MOT until January 1st 2016. The V5 (on which the car shows as an historic vehicle) is in my name, at my address & the car is currently on the road. The mileage shows 17390, for what that's worth.

There has been welding done on the chassis as you would expect and in the future I am sure it will need patching again but at the moment all appears solid, the foot wells are very tidy with chequer plate floors, the door top are not brilliant but windows work etc.  The “elephant hide” type seats are in very good condition, in the middle where the third seat would normally go the battery sits below.  I also have spare hard top that can come with the land rover.  The brake shoes have been replaced all round.

The panels are very straight but the land rover would benefit from a re-paint.  I have a virtually full tin (5Ltr) of Bronze Green paint for body work, Etch Primer, Limestone for the wheels.  There are brush marks visible in the paint, particularly on the bonnet. The best I can say is that it needs re-painting but the paint above mentioned will be included in the sale and is plenty to re-spray her about five times over.

The rear tow bar and rear electrics have been re-wired in the last twelve months.

Two jobs that would benefit of being done soon in my opinion are replace the Cam-belt and place a new thermostat in.  These are two jobs that I would do if I was keeping her for another couple of years.

The canvas roof is a heavy material canvass type I have glued a water proof material to the inside which has made it 97 percent water proof but there are a couple drips getting into the rear but nothing to worry about.  The canvass has windows in the side and rear.
The battery is my old spare out of our old land rover freelander. It turns the motor over briskly but I couldn't answer for it's ability to hold that charge.  I have had the alternator reconditioned professionally in the last fourteen months.

I like the style & look of the large tyres reasonable amount of tread left on them.  I have also had two of the wheels sand blasted and then sprayed them myself in the Limestone the other two wheels could do with having this done too.

It's a half-century old it comes from a time before: ABS, child seats, air bags, cat converters, radial tyres or power steering. The suspension is crude, the drum brakes are adequate I have had all the hub seals done also on all the wheels and cooper brake piping all round.  The 200TDI does make the car go very well probably too well for the current brakes if I was keeping her long term would probably look to upgrade the brakes.  I haven't done more than a few dozens of miles in this in the last two years & wouldn't attempt a journey of any length without a comprehensive tool kit & a selection of spare parts.  My advice is if you're going to be surprised by one or more of: the comedy wipers, uncomfortable ride, ludicrous “heater” (but does work!), then this probably isn't for you.

She is great fun to drive though especially with the roof off.  I would prefer anyone that seriously wants to buy it to view it first before bidding & see the vehicle, or at the very least get in touch. I'll cancel bids from any one with fewer than 10 feedback entries. I'm selling this in an auction with absolutely no warranty given, implied or in any other way expressed, so be sure you know what you're getting into. I expect payment in cash on collection & there will be no haggling after the hammer falls.  I may choose to end early as it is advertised elsewhere.  Lastly no overseas bidders I will not ship/post overseas.  Happy bidding.

Land Rover Series 2a SWB 1965, 200tdi , Disc Brakes , Overdrive , - Daily Driver

Sellers Comments

For sale is this rather special, everyday usable series land rover. Before listing the details and specifications of this vehicle I will give a bit of background information.

This vehicle was rebuilt by a qualified engineer and lifelong series land rover fanatic, and incorporates details not often seen on others.

This is one of 2 land rovers I own, the other is built to very similar specification, but it has been my only car since the age of 17 so I will never sell it. The land rover for sale was bought as a project for myself and my father and has now been complete and in use for just under a year.

I will be sad to see it go, but my series land rover obsession sees me wanting to build a series 1 next and as this one is very similar to my other Series 2a, so it doesn't get used as much as it deserves, so I am offering it for sale to fund a series 1 build!

The basis of this vehicle is a 1965 Tax Exempt Series 2A SWB, ex-military, full hard top with 5 previous owners, It finished its military use in 1973.

It has been fully rebuilt with Galvanised bulkhead, front panel, floor supports a 200Tdi engine, Disc brakes, overdrive, and many new parts. I will list its specification in bullet points to make it easy to read through:

·       200Tdi engine – These are a fantastic engine and extremely well matched to this vehicle, and are one of the key points to making these vehicles suitable for daily use. I bought a 200tdi discovery that had only covered 140 thousand miles as a donor for this, so I could be sure it was in good condition. Before fitment it was fitted with new OEM timing belt, tensioner and idler pulleys and new water pump. So this engine will be good for many thousands of miles to come. Another huge plus point of these engines is that the vehicle can now easily return 35mpg. The engine is fitted with a temperature sender that allows the original series gauge to be retained and an electric cooling fan has been fitted with a manual switch. This allows you to accurately monitor engine temp and switch the fan on, on the rare occasion that it is needed. A new radiator and oil cooler of the discovery type have been fitted in very neatly, and look to be factory fitted, this if a great improvement over keeping the original series radiator, as it incorporates an oil cooler that is required for the turbo. This had been combined with an authentic brass header tank from an early range rover. Please see the photos, but all this adds up to a very neat and authentic looking engine bay, while actually being hugely updated. Please note the engine has a 300tdi top cover fitted to help reduce engine sound, this can easily be taken off in a few seconds if you don't like the look of it. A discovery intercooler has also been fitted to make the most out of the Tdi power and economy.

·         Disc Brakes (front) – With the Tdi engine I would consider this to be a necessary upgrade, and missing from so many 200Tdi conversions. I have fitted the Wild Industries conversion kit, as this kit makes use of standard land rover callipers and discs, so future parts availability will be both easy and cheap. When fitting this kit I purchased new Lockheed (OEM) front callipers and also replaced the rear drums with new cylinders and shoes. But it doesn't end there, the entire braking system has been redone using a Defender master cylinder and Servo coupled to a series 3 pedal box and new copper nickel brake lines with brass fittings throughout. So visual authenticity is maintained from the driving position but the performance is modern. You will notice the defender servo fitment in the engine bay photo, this has been neatly fitted to a series 3 pedal box, meaning the wing does not need to be trimmed more than a standard series servo fitment, but performance is greatly improved. The brakes are truly fantastic on this vehicle and are one of its best points.

Stainless steel Exhaust – Fitted with a full stainless exhaust from the turbo to the tail pipe, following the original route. The downpipe has been custom made from large diameter stainless tube to give maximum performance and long lifespan. This is another feature that sets this vehicle apart from many others.

·         Gearbox – The original gearbox has been replaced with a series 3 type from a 1982 vehicle, making it one of the most modern series boxes available. The series 3 gearbox benefits from having synchromesh on all forward gears making this vehicle much easier to drive.

·         Clutch – A new OEM 9.5” clutch plate and cover have been fitted, I have fitted the stronger 8 spring type clutch plate which should make it much more robust than the more common 6 spring type (Another detail not often considered). The clutch master cylinder and piping have also been replaced with new.

·         Fairey Overdrive – It is fitted with a fairy overdrive that is in very good condition and correctly fitted with anti-scuff paste. These are notorious for having a whine, but this one is surprisingly quiet. I chose the overdrive over fitting 3.54 ratio diffs as it offers the same top end speed/performance without sacrificing low speed performance. 3.54 diffs really do sacrifice performance in low ratio, and I didn't want to do that.  With the overdrive this vehicle cruises nicely at 55-60mph and is capable of much more.

·         Galvanised Bulkhead – Bulkheads are probably the most rust prone part on these vehicles so by galvanising it is preserved as well as possible. The original bulkhead was professionally repaired using correct ribbed foot wells and period details, it was then hot dipped galvanised in a purpose made jig to prevent it from warping, before being etch primed and painted to look original.

·         Galvanised front panel – As per bulkhead

·         Galvanised Tub supports – Another rust prone part now well preserved for a long service life.

·         Chassis – The original chassis has been professionally repaired, all rust areas have been cut out and replaced with new metal. It was then painted in rust preventing polyurethane paint and sprayed on the inside with wax oil using a purpose made tool. So this chassis is fit for a long service life.

·         Parabolic springs - Fitted with 2 leaf front, 3 leaf rear parabolic springs (GME) and pro comp ES300 dampers, as well as new u bolts and bushes. This combination gives a nice supple ride, whilst retaining the series land rover feel.

·         Sound deadening/interior – I have fitted the Wright off road / Exmoor trim moulded floor matting, this makes the interior very neat and also helps a lot with sound insulation. Please note the matting has been cut for fitment of a round smiths heater, but I do not have one fitted. The engine side of the bulkhead had been fitted with waterproof foam to help with sound and heat insulation. The rear floor and rear door have been lined with a hard rubber matting for practicality and sound insulation. It has the series 3 type deluxe seats fitted which I find to be very comfortable whilst retaining the authentic appearance. I also have a pair of tip up seats for the rear, I have not fitted these, but they can be included if required. The dash has been fitted with a rebuilt speedometer and odometer, and is very accurate and has a steady needle.  The Other gauges have also been serviced and are working as they should.

·         Aluminium door tops – Fitted with the military style aluminium door tops with 2 sliding panels, these solve the rust problems of standard door tops and make it easy to adjust your wing mirrors.

·         Wheels and tyres – fitted with wolf wheels painted in limestone to match the roof and 235 85 16 BF Goodrich tyres. The front tyres are BFG all-terrain and have covered less than 500 miles, the rear tyres are BFG Trac Edge and are older, but still have plenty of tread left. The spare wheel does not match and is a modular wheel with a Colway tyre (same pattern as BGF all-terrain).

·         Registration and V5 – This has been correctly updated with the new engine number, capacity and fuel type, So all is as it should be and will only require a straightforward change of keeper. It has a current MOT until –5th August 2015 and it is of course tax exempt. It has no problems sailing through the MOT and the inspectors have been very impressed by it during the test, and were blown away by the braking performance.

·         Bodywork – This was built to be a usable vehicle but also look authentic, so it has been resprayed in pastel green and limestone, but please note I am not a fan of body filler (especially on old land rovers) so I have retained all the original dents, so it retains its character and well used appearance.

Other - I will supply this vehicle with a list of the parts used in it's various updates, this will make it easy for the future owner to source parts in the long run, and make maintenance very straightforward. As i have previously mentioned all the updates to this vehicle have used Land Rover parts, so sourcing parts will be both easy and cheap, not that they will be needed for a very long time, as most things are new OEM! I can also supply a comprehensive collection of photos from the rebuild.

I have tried my best to describe all the details, but there are many more that I have not mentioned, so please look through the photos and feel free to ask any questions you like. Viewing by arrangement is very welcome and test driving is fine as long as you bring insurance, or I can take you for a drive in it if not.

I have included photos from the rebuild as well as some during use more recently, so you can see the make-up of this vehicle. It is currently fitted with a full hardtop as shown in some of the photos.

Please note this is an old land rover and despite all the updates, modifications and refinements it is still a very basic vehicle and is by no means a perfect modern car, it is for the enthusiast that wants a usable classic, built to a very high mechanical standard.

You are bidding to buy, I am a private seller so cannot offer any warranty. This vehicle is sold as seen.

Sold with no reserve, as this land rover speaks for itself in terms of value, usability and quality of updated parts.

This is also advertised elsewhere so I withhold the right to withdraw it from this auction.

Cash on collection or Bank transfer preferred.

LAND ROVER SERIES 2a (IIa) 1965 FULLY RESTORED 88" 2.25 DIESEL STUNNING!

Land Rover Series 2a - 1965 - 88” - 2.25 original diesel

  • Tax free and classic car insurance (£65 per year)
  • Fully restored – stunning example with extensive history
  • £000’a spent with many news parts
  • One year’s MOT with no advisories + vehicle tax renewed in January

Here for sale is my stunning restored 1965 Land Rover Series 2a 88”. This stunning original car has been lovely restored over the last three years and is in fantastic useable condition. I have been careful not to lose the originality of the car and it still has a lovely feel and patina.

It has the original 2.25 three bearing crank Diesel engine with overdrive making it a very useable and practical vehicle returning a very respectable 30 mpg. This is your chance to own a rare and appreciating classic, this lovely example has had a very labour and cash extensive restoration. To maintain its originality, this vehicle has been thoughtfully and carefully restored with lots of time and money spent.

Previous history

This lovely car has had only four previous owners. The vehicle comes with a comprehensive history, original hand books and manuals etc. Including a diary hand/ book listing works and services carried out from November 1976 to present day. From 1967 to 2007 the vehicle was owned by two brothers, both mechanics from Bulwell in Nottingham UK. During this time the vehicle wanted for nothing explaining why, when it was bought unrestored by a previous owner in 07 the vehicle was in fantastic condition for its age, the vehicle was then taken to the Channel Islands and subsequently returned again where it was used in London.

The previous owner then purchased the vehicle in 2012 and spent a vast amount of money restoring it further. I purchased the vehicle last year and have subsequently carried out a full respray on the car externally with much of the internal areas shot blasted and resprayed, added a new stick set and tilt and also had the bottom of the car fully undersealed and wax oiled. My intention was to keep the Landy as a second car as it is pretty much free motoring now, however I am very reluctantly selling the car now as I am a property developer and I have several projects on so need to liquidate funds.

Chassis and bodywork

The Chassis is the original Series 2a chassis which is in excellent solid condition no welding or corrosion, this is extremely rare to find as many restored Landy’s have replacement chassis which in my opinion makes them non original. The Bulkhead has been completely restored. Body panels all removed. Bulkhead sandblasted new panels plates, seam sealed etc. Hopefully you can see from the photographs.

At the end of last year the car was fully resprayed in the correct and original deep bronze green and looks absolutely stunning. The panels are all straight and true with no significant dings or damage, the external galvanised parts looks excellent and many of the original items have been regalvanised. All five steel wheels have been fully shot blasted and resprayed and look great.

Internally the rear cab has also been shot blasted and resprayed and she also has new floor panels which have had the same treatment. Both the doors have been resprayed internally. The rear tailgate was sourced from an original Series 2a and has been fully sprayed inside and out.

She also has a new windscreen and has original chrome surround and glass indicators and side light lenses which are very rare.

The engine and running gear

The Engine is the original diesel 2.225cc in excellent condition and starts on the key first time in all weathers. It maintains perfect oil pressure and temperature at all times. According to the history the engine was overhauled by rover about 40.000 miles ago.

The engine block and top end was stripped and inspected last year checking bores pistons - everything measured out just fine; all well within the tolerances; the top end was overhauled and rebuilt with new head gasket. Plenty of years left in the old girl, she is totally reliable and dependable. I would say she achieves around 30 mpg which is fantastic for a car of this age and type.

Running gear all overhauled lots of work and money spent. Has very rare selectro, heavy duty free wheeling hubs.

Gear box, suspension, electrics and other parts

Gear Box has been overhauled new clutch etc. the gearbox is lovely and quiet all gears select fine; the overdrive is superb and very quiet.

Electrics - The vehicle has had a complete re-wire, new wiring loom etc.

Brakes - The brakes have been completely overhauled with new parts all round.

Suspension - She sits on new parabolic springs and matching shocks all around.

Five new army style off road tyres.

Internal instruments and rear cab

The interior is excellent and the car benefits from new seats in the front and rear plus rare link mats in both front and rear.

The car has an original Smiths heater which actually throws out quite a lot of heat and also original wiper motors for both driver’s and passenger’s side. All the instruments work exactly how they should and are in excellent condition.

The car also benefits from original overdrive which makes it a totally useable vehicle for modern condition on any type of road. On a motorway or dual carriageway you can easily and comfortably achieve 60 mph without too much fuss, without the overdrive the car would be almost impossible to use on normal roads (without upsetting a lot of people).

She also is remarkably fuel efficient and returns on average around 30 mpg making this the most useable of classic cars.

The Landy also benefits from a new galvanised hoop set and full hood from Exmoor trim finished in lovely sand colour.

Recent services

In 2013 there have been full services carried out all fluids oils were drained and replaced, the gearbox and rear diff had slick 50 added, the breaks have also been cleaned and set up etc.

Also last year the car has had another fluid check and service with an additional fluid check carried out in February of this year.

The Landy has just been in for an MOT and has a full MOT with no advisories, the vehicle tax was renewed in January for a year and is obviously tax free.

To summarise, I'm sure you'll agree this is a lovely example of this classic Landover; it is a genuine reluctant sale. If you are unable to view the vehicle I'm happy to send further detailed photographs, should you require any further information please let me know? Viewings are welcome and recommended.

This is your chance to purchase a fully restored classic that will provide you years of trouble free motoring and a minimal cost. With the Defender now being discontinued and prices of all Land Rovers rocketing up in recent years this has to be a sound investment and far more entertaining than leaving your money in the bank.

The car can be viewed with prior arrangement in the Haywards Heath area (RH16) - please feel free to contact me to arrange a viewing or ask any further questions.

Item specifics

Condition:Used : Split the cost with friends
Seller notes:No MOT. She's been sat a while and typical Landy the clutch is stuck, she will drive starting in gear. Engine runs lumpy and wants to stall when cold. No battery but can borrow one for starting and trailering away. Bit of wiring to finish. Front tyres cracked but hold air. She's nearly 50 and a Landrover, panels are not mint but are ok. Difficult to describe and i want to be as honest as i can, i think a few wk ends work will see her back on the road but please come and have a look for yourself. Too good to scrap but no show winner.
