Land Rover Series 1 86" 1953 - Tenterden

Land Rover Series 1 86" 1953 First registered on 16/11/1953, so an early 86 inch. Tax and MOT free, so insurance is all you need. Its a great runner and has been enjoyable to go around in when the sun has been out. It was originally green, which can be seen in places, but it was then painted blue (along time ago) by a previous owner. The V5 states blue. It seems to have the original engine and runner gear, but I cannot guarantee this. There are patches to the chassis, cross member and foot wells/bulkhead, as you'd expect at 62 years old! New canvas top fitted a few months ago, but I left it in a shed for a while after exmoor trim posted it and a mouse got the taste for it and chewed a small hole in the roof, as pictured. Nothing drastic or visible from standing next to it as it is on the top of the roof. Door tops are present and fit fine, they are just off at the moment as the weather is good. Spare wheel also comes with the landy, it bolts on the bonnet but I have removed it whilst driving about as it gets in the way.

SERIES 1 LAND ROVER. 1957 86 INCH, A REAL LIFE BARN FIND AND IT'S ALL THERE

GENUINE barn find and so what you see is what you get. Rare Series 1 diesel, 1957 and believed to have been registered at new to the Belgian Air Force. Hence it began as a 4x2 and not the usual 4x4! At some stage during it's life, someone has made it into a 4-wheel drive by making the front axle live. I guess you could easily "reverse" this process. Only about 2 months ago, we had her puffing, panting and blowing some good diesel smoke and so she will run with time and love. Everything is there (somewhere in the sheds!) front wings, front panel, doors, windscreen, hard top, seats etc. Hard top is without glass. So, a real find. Bulkhead a touch iffy on the offside but I have seen a lot worse (see photos) and the chassis is actually not bad. For restoration. Just stating the obvious! Great opportunity.

Land Rover Series 1 MOT and TAX exempt 86'' easy restoration project

Sellers Comments

Land Rover Series 1

UKT 112

1955

MOT and TAX exempt historic vehicle

V5 log book present

Chassis number 57105439

86’’ wheelbase

2.25 petrol correctly registered on V5

Transferable number plate

This is a genuine barn find that has sat under cover and not moved since last taxed in December 2002. The last owner acquired this Series 1 on the 9/11/1986 and has remained in their barn up until being offered today.

Obviously, this Land Rover is for restoration, however, not the normal rubbish offered with dodgy history etc. In fact, I hold the original blue registration document alongside the current V5C and both logbooks marry up, along with old tax discs etc.

Okay what have we got... well the chassis is in remarkable condition and retains its original rear cross member which has one small hole on the underside (easy repair). The main chassis rails are rot free alongside cross members and outriggers. The only other small repair I can see is the front cross member has a small hole, which will also be an easy repair. The bulkhead A posts have the usual corrosion to the bottoms, and the N/S and O/S sections just above the foot wells will need to be plated. The bulkhead overall is in repairable condition; however it would benefit from a replacement.

At some point in the cars history a nudge bar was added (only bolted on) and a rear bumper too. The tailgate has been removed, a sheet of aluminium now overlays the aperture which is held in by rivets where the galvanised body capping are. Easily remedied as the tailgate aperture and uprights remain, meaning all that is needed is a replacement tailgate, which would fit as original.

I have had the engine running and it sounds sweet off an auxiliary petrol tank so not to drag up old fuel and muck from the main tank. I have asked the previous owner how the gearbox is and she said the gears located as they should do when it was last driven.

For 30 years, I have worked on Land Rover Series as a panel beater/sprayer /welder, having done various restorations in my time. I purchased this Series 1 to restore but with clients expectations regarding their restorations I am finding less time to complete my own projects. This is the only reason for sale and I believe this could be a fabulous project and investment in the right hands.

As mentioned this is a restoration project so do not expect to drive it home, the clutch is seized (although I believe it would free with use). You will need a trailer to collect and I am available to help load etc.

In summery a genuine Series 1 86’’ retaining its period dash, the body in good overall condition, the chassis in very good overall condition, and paperwork present.
