Land Rover - Carawagon

1970 Land Rover 2A Carawagon

For sale this Land Rover Series IIA – 109 ” Searle 4 berth Carawagon.
One of the rarer Land Rover conversions, this is a genuine “Civilian” 4 berth Carawagon. (Manufactured by Searle / Carawagon International Ltd).
The Land Rover is in lovely condition, and fit to set off anywhere. It is right hand drive, imported from England to the Netherlands in oktober 1998.
In unspoiled original condition, it is stil in its first (limestone)paint. No repairs nor welds on the chassis or bulkhead/doors.
  • Original 2,6 ltr., lovely running, Rover 6 cilinder petrol engine, witch gives her lots of power at low revs.
  • Fairey's overdrive.
  • MAP free-wheeling hubs,
  • Optional rims (1 Tonne) 6,5L*16*20,6 with Hankook 235/85 R16 tires
  • Parabole leaf-springs with polybushes,
  • Discbrakes on front wheels,
  • Electronic ignition,
  • Engine preheater.

All original “Carawagon” features supplied new with the Land Rover are included:
  • Rear bench seat (fold to make double bed)
  • Elevating roof (gives 6′ 2″ headroom)
  • Extra bunk beds – to make 4 berth
  • Rear living tent
  • Original cooker with grill and grillpan.
  • Storage unit with sliding doors
  • Sink with water pump and pull out bowl
  • Fold out table
  • Refrigerator (Electrolux) working on 12Volts, or 240volts or Butane,(two gasbottles are placed under the chassis)
  • Two 12Volt batterys with auxiliary battery switches(choice for start and/or household)
The rubbers on the roof windows are recently renewed.
A roofrack from a Carawagon Tactical Command Post is included in the sale!

The Carawagon is well know for it’s simple but luxury design and the use of good quality materials – this is reflected in the current condition of the vehicle more than 47 years on. The Land Rover have been stored under dry protection and the chassis and framework is treated with transparend Valvoline 550 ML.(no suprises underneath paint)
All oil in engine, gearbox, transferbox, overdrive, swivels, steeringbox etc have been renewed.  As wel as cooling water and grease on all joins.

But there are some minor flaws after 47 years of use:
  • The inevitable usermarks on tin, paint and upholstery.
  • Some rubber seal over the piano-type roof hinges need repare.
  • A few small dents left untouched to preserve the original paint.
  • Slight surface rust at the bottom of the the doors and footwels, easy to cure but reluctant to put paint on it. Therefore its been treated with rust proofing wax.
I do have the car listed locally

Land Rover Series 2a Carawagon

Seller Comments - Alex’ is a 1968 series 2a Land Rover with the 109-inch chassis and the straight-six 2.6-litre petrol engine. He went straight from the Land Rover factory to R.J. Searle Ltd. in Sunbury on Thames to be fitted with a Carawagon interior and solid raising roof. The resulting vehicle looks very period and will sleep and cater for four people (two in the roof and two on the rear seats that fold down to make a double bed). The current owner purchased in 1998 from an elderly gentleman on the Isle of Wight who carried out a lot of work on the car to make it fit for expedition travel. So the original petrol tank has been replaced with a long-range military version, the electrical system was upgraded and an LPG system (untested) fitted. The seller used it for a few years as a second vehicle and self-contained holiday camper but was forced to lay it up in 2005 due a change in job that meant he needed a more sensible car. (Although we struggle to think of any car that is more sensible than a Land Rover with a bed in it, even our enthusiasm allows us to acknowledge that this is not, perhaps, an ideal car in which to commute…) If you subscribe to the theory that old Land Rovers look best when they’re battled scarred and well patinated then you’ll agree that Alex is an absolute beauty! The bulkhead and rear chassis has been the subject of some work previously but no enthusiast would approach this car with anything other than a full restoration in mind. He or she might strike lucky and get away with only mild fettling but a chassis-up refurbishment would probably be the most cost-effective (and fun!) way to get Alex back on the road. The front door tops have started to rot, and the bulkhead is starting to rust at the bottom. The bonnet-mounted spare wheel is to hand. Having said that, there is no evidence that Alex has ever been seriously off-roaded, so he has avoided the sort of conditions that have led to the early death of so many Land Rovers.
