1984 model on original chassis. 4cyl 5 main bearing petrol engine, coupled to a 4spd manual transmission with Fairey Overdrive. Rocky Mountain Parabolic springs and dampers. LWB steel wheels with 7.50x16 radial Avon Rangemaster tyres. Sensible upgrades include freewheeling hubs, full length galvanised ‘Brownchurch’ roof rack and ladder, tow bar and electrics, halogen headlights, inertia front seat belts, rear bench seats and FM/CD stereo. Registered on 18th January 1984.
Description:
The Series III was launched in 1971, and didn’t change a great deal from the Series IIA that preceded it. It is still the type of classic Land Rover that features strongly in the general public's perception of the Land Rover, and its shape was carried right through from the Series II to the most recent Defender. Upgrades from the Series IIA included a full synchromesh gearbox, new dashboard with integral heater and instrument cluster, radiator grille, and servo assisted brakes.
This particular model is a regular ‘Hard Top’ short wheel base (88”), originally Marine Blue but repainted in military satin black in recent years. The engine fires up straight away on the first turn of the key, settling down into a quiet tick over with no smoke or fuss. It pulls brilliantly on the road accelerating up to speed easily. All gears select perfectly and the low range and four wheel drive work as they should, along with the overdrive allowing it to cruise at approx. 60-65mph without a problem. It will pull up to a strong stop nice and straight with the servo assisted brakes. On the road or off it, the vehicle is very capable, and rides very nicely with the parabolic springs and taller tyres.
The vehicle is very solid overall. The chassis and bulkhead are excellent, the chassis having had a couple of outriggers welded on to a good standard, and the rear crossmember appears to be original. The passenger side door top needs replacement, but is still functioning since it has rotted on the inside of the car rather than out, but these are cheap and easy to replace. The body work is reasonably straight; the paintwork has been brush painted with the aforementioned Military black, but an old Land Rover wears such a paint job fine!
The electrical system all appears to function correctly including the heater. The full length roof rack is in good condition, and has an access ladder mounted on the rear; ideal for those weekends away camping, surf boards, ladders, fence panels or anything that is too large/long to go inside the vehicle. If you manage to yourself into “a spot of bother”, there is an electric ‘Superwinch’ to extract the vehicle, extract inferior vehicles, recover a boat, or even to shift other heavy objects! The winch is mounted on a very sturdy bumper, which has been welded to the chassis. This could be cut off and replaced with a standard bumper if you wished to do so.
The interior is okay, with three vinyl seats in the front and two vinyl bench seats in the back for four people, along with front and rear rubber floor mats. There is a radio/cd stereo mounted in the dashboard so you can listen to those tunes when on a longer trip. The only fault of mention is that the speedometer does not work, which is most likely to be a broken cable as it does not turn at the head end, so we cannot verify the mileage of the vehicle as we don’t know how long this has been broken for.
This versatile old truck is a great entry point into the world of classic Land Rovers, and would be ideal for those weekend camping trips, runs down to the South West with the surf boards up top and your mates in the back, fishing or shooting trips, or even to put to work collecting logs from the woods in winter etc… work or play (or both!), it’s ready to go!

The vehicle must be collected from our premises on the outskirts of Chester. We can also arrange UK delivery by trailer if you so require.
