V8 Series 2a - Birmingham

Land Rover Series 2A, 1967, V8, SWB

Welcome to the auction of my lovely series 2a Land Rover from 1967. It saddens me to sell, but doing so for family reasons.

Over the years she has had some changes, especially in the last few a good overhaul was done and a rear half chassis was replaced, all brake pipes and lines, wheel cylinders, and the suspension was upgraded to parabolic springs and shock absorbers front and rear (about 5 years ago).

MOT untill mid Jan 2016, Tax exempt, and taxed untill December 2015 (but due to new rules you'll need to sort your own out)

Mechanical:

3.5 V8 engine, good running condition, starts everytime - couple of leaks at the bottom end
4 speed box with overdrive, high and low 4 and 2 wd all working well - couple of standard leaks. There is a rumble sometimes when in gear and the clutch is down, this stops when you pull away - not there that often.
Exhaust is good, but has a few patches on it - not blowing
Free wheeling front hubs
Complete custom made fully water tight wiring loom (with relays and fuseboard to modernise)
Complete ignition overhaul 6 months ago, new plugs, leads, disi cap, arm, coil,
Both Carbs overhauled with new gaskets and seals
Electric regulated fuel pump, fuel lines and tank replaced in overhaul
Electric cooling fan, thermostat operated
Mains power kill switch - fitted for security more than anything else
Large powerful battery, in very good condition (i always kill the power by removing switch as it does drain battery if left)
The wheels and tyres shown in the final picture is what will be fitted, not the ones that are shown when photographed on the grass. Excellent tread Michelin Tyres.

External/Internal:

The overall condition for the land rover is very good, it was rollerpainted during its overhaul a few years ago in beige.
Bulkhead had welding done to it during overhaul and is strong

Chassis - good and solid with rear half (not quarter to be clear) replaced, front spring hangers were replaced at some point out riggers are good too, there are patches on the chassis but all nice and solid.

There are personal touches on the front and rear wings, shown in the picture.

Both doors and door tops were brand new when over haul was done and are damage free - all lockable
Truck cab, with lockable rear window
Inside there are two seats, a few additional guages,
Rear section is just open with nothing in it

There are a few spare bits that i will include, lower suspension damper bushes, 2x front brake wheel cylinders, probably more but i cant remember whats in the garage!

The brakes almost need a double pump, there is no air in the system, i believe this is down to adjustment but have not had the chance to get it sorted. You cant drive this like a modern car, so i put it down to charchter and drive it accordingly. It does pull up in a straight line, so i belive it is just the rears that require adjustment.

This vehicle is nearly 50 years old and is far from perfect! Do not expect a pristine vehicle because its not, however it is a great useable land rover with bags of charachter and a driving experience like no other! I drove it round last summer with no roof and loved every minute of it - and i expect you to do the same.

I have tried to describe and list everything i can, i have checked it several times and if i have forgotten something i will update as i go. I would advise looking at any vehicle prior to bidding so you know what your bidding for. It's a great appreciating classic motor, and i will be sad to let her go.

Any questions please ask, and i will do my best to respond.

Deposit of £200 at end of auction, Sold as seen and no returns accepeted. full payment via bank transfer or cash on collection.

This is a UK ONLY auction, the vechile is based in Birmingham 5 minutes from j2 of M42.

Advertised elsewhere too so I may end early if needed

Series 2a - Located in Rugby - Warwickshire

Land Rover Series 2a. Not series 1, 2, 3

Hello and welcome to my auction. I bought this Land Rover from a friend of mine around a year ago with the intention of restoring it and getting it back on the road. I'm struggling to find the time to do anything with it so the time has come to let it go. I did get round to fitting a brand new steering idler/relay. The engine runs, it just needs the gearbox putting in which is included in the sale. I can not guarentee the condition of the gearbox, however, i've had a look round it and all seems ok. the input shaft doesn't rattle about and there are no inappropriate noises when turned. The chassis is in good condition and has had a new rear quarter in the past. Front dumirons will need replacing. All floor panels and seat box are included, no seats though as they were ruined so were binned. I have the V5 in my name and the correct keys. Please feel free to come and have a good look round it. Contact can be made via ebay or by phone. Thanks for looking. John. 07888699355. CASH ON COLLECTION OR BANK TRANSFER please. I would expect the land rover to be collected and paid for within 2 weeks please.

Land Rover Series 2a 88, (1963)

Sellers Comments -

Very solid tax exempt series 2a,MOT until September 2015 and only one advisory on brake adjustment. Vehicle check Clear and cert available.
It has a series 3 bulkhead fitted, Discovery rear Diff,I also have a Disco Diff for the front that hasn't been fitted yet with prop that is included.
I only aquired recently but change of plans, its now for sale.

Previous MOTs not showing any issues with body or chassis, only visible thing I can see is where it has had chequer plate fitted in the past to front wing tops. This is a 50 year old vehicle that would make a good running resto, so be aware of this.

Viewing recommended.

Land Rover Series 2a 1962 body off rebuild, New MOT

Land Rover Series 2a 1962 body off rebuild, New MOT

Sellers Comments
I bought this vehicle three years ago as a rolling project. My original intention was to patch it up for fun. But after a few months I decided to change tack. Here was a car that had had an extremely hard working life and too many worn or incorrect components to simply throw it back together.  And since I was now going the whole rebuild route why not have a near impossible objective of retaining all the car's historic features and authenticy whilst trying to build in a bit more longevity than usual?  I still didn't want the nice shiney facsimile which seems to be the outcome from so many commercial rebuilds. I wanted the car to end up a genuine item still telling it's story. So, three years and over £6,000 worth of parts later, it's still got some dents and dings and imperfections. I think it's entitled to them.

It's also got:
-  MOT from 3 March. No advisories
-  heavy duty galvanised chassis
-  rebuilt galvanised bulkhead with heavy duty footwells to original pattern.
-  new galvanised fuel tank
-  galvanised remanufactured front panel
-  totally rebuilt tub floor with all new ribs and rails and a thicker floor plate.
-  professional remanufactured clutch operating mechanism, fitted with stainless steel sleeve to minimise future wear
-  professionally rebuilt original radiator with new core
-  fully rebuilt axles front and rear with quality bearings and seals
-  four new British-made road springs with Armstrong shocks
-  new Mintex brake shoes, pistons, and refurbed original combined brake/clutch fluid reservoir
-  new OEM swivels fitted with old school leather gaiters
-  rebuilt doors with new skins, seals and new door tops with plastic window runners
-  new heavy duty, higher output dynamo
-  new Land Rover battery
-  professionally rebuilt original wiper motors
-  new wiring loom
-  new screen washers
-  professionally rebuilt period Clayton heater (yes, that's the one that works!)
-  rebuilt seat bench
-  galvanised front wing struts
-  new inner wing panels
- full set new Automec copper brake pipes with stainless front flexies
-  period catflap and tailgate with complete set of fittings and new lock
-  set of five refurbed SWB wheels in bronze green for fitting tyres of your choice.
( At present she's running on LWB slave wheels with good winter tyres).
-  new water pump fitted. Timing cover removed and the usual rusted bolts removed (eventually!) and replaced with new
-  period sidelights and indicators ( with hazard flashers)
- new Lucas replica headlamps of the period
- new towhitch
- refurbed MAP free wheel hubs
- stainless steel inserts in place of rotted ends of rear panels on each side of tailgate
- seat belts
- door and wing mirros
- body fitted with new plated bolts throughout (not metric!)
- refurbed siderails and correct deep sills

The engine is pretty much as was apart from the work on timing cover. Starts well and runs fine. No smoke, equal compression. Been serviced with new plugs, leads, points, coil etc.
Clutch and gearbox are also unmolested apart from rebuilding of the original clutch operating mechanism. There are still some minor issues: the fuel guage sort of works but not properly and the engine overheat thermostat sticks, with the red light on (so I've disconnected it pending finding a replacement). There's a minor rain leak under the windscreen - despite new seals. Paintwork looks better in the pix as usual but is OK.

The vehicle comes with a photographic record of the rebuild and a seriously huge pile of bills. I stopped counting a while back. There's also a letter from Land Rover confirming the original delivery of vehicle. It's registered as a "Station Tractor". Was apparently used off the public road for first 20 years of it's life and was off again for the past 10 years, presumably awaiting rescue.

Vehicle is available for inspection. This is strongly recommended. Despite the extent of the work it should be realised that this is still an old used vehicle of an old design for old style motoring ( eg no synchro on first 2 gears, slight bit of steering wander, bit of oil on floor ( despite new seals, that's how it is with these motors). Keeping this car will always require a bit of effort and it offered as a work in progress. But hopefully the work so far will ensure it's survival for a good while yet. As you can imagine this is a reluctant sale after so much work but I've got way behind with other projects that are now becoming urgent so it unfortunately has to go.

Complete overdrive kit available at extra cost.
