How to Wash a Car Properly at Home

Here's what you'll need:

  • A source of water, like a hosepipe
  • Two buckets
  • Microfibre cloth, or car mitt
  • Drying towels, microfibre works best
  • A wheel brush
  • Optional: Dirt traps

1. Hose your car down with water:

Use a garden hose or portable hand hose to thoroughly rinse your car. If you don't have access to a hosepipe, then a large watering can should do the trick. Be cautious with pressure washers to avoid damaging the paint.

2. Thoroughly wash the wheels and tyres:

Focus on the wheels with most of your soap, using a wheel brush to remove brake dust. Give the tyres a quick clean to make your car stand out. If brake dust has accumulated on the wheel, then using a wheel brush can help get rid of it more easily.

3. Preparing the cleaning mixture:

Fill one bucket with water and car shampoo, and the other with fresh water. Don't use dish washing liquid! Add dirt traps to keep dirt at the bottom.

4. Start at the top of the car:

Take your wash mitt and dip into the bucket with car shampoo, and make sure you clean from the top down. Start with the roof and then go around the car in sections or columns on the car. Rinse the wash mitt in your bucket with fresh water, before dipping back into the car shampoo solution.

5. Rinse the car after cleaning:

Rinse the car thoroughly to remove all soap, ensuring it doesn't air dry.

6. Dry with microfibre rags:

Use microfibre towels to dry the car with a sideways motion, or pat-dry if preferred.

7. Finish off with protective wax polish:

This step is optional, and somewhat dependent on the car shampoo used. For long-lasting protection, apply a wax polish using a new microfibre cloth, working in straight lines on small areas.
